Lutheran Church Charities (LCC), best known for our Comfort Dogs and Disaster Response work really has only one goal with all of our ministries – to share the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ to those who are suffering and in need. We are blessed to be able to do that also through teaching, ministry support (where every dollar donated goes to the ministry or organization for which it was intended), devotional writing and training.
“It’s not about the dogs…” is a phrase heard often at LCC, and it is NOT about the dogs. The dogs open doors of conversation with people all over the country who need comfort, from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut to local nursing homes. LCC uses our K-9 Comfort Dogs and our Kare 9 Military Comfort Dogs to start conversations and through prayer offer hurting people the peace that only God can give.
More than 1,300 people have volunteered with LCC to assist others in disaster response situations. Most have been trained as LERT (Lutheran Early Response Team) members, some with chainsaw expertise (to clear debris left behind by tornadoes or earthquakes), others trained in securing damaged homes from additional wind or water damage, still others in first aid, food preparation and more.
Daily devotions written by LCC president Tim Hetzner are distributed to more than 10,000 people and his Bible classes have hundreds of participants (both in person and on-line). Each week LCC shares news and specific needs to thousands who visit our website or receive our e-newsletter. Stories about people we have served are interwoven with reports of people and ministries in need. In the last decade more than $ 5,000,000 in products and $ 3,000,000 in monetary donations passed through LCC and was sent dollar in/dollar out to local churches and ministries so they could help those suffering and in need.
